Chitin nanofibers
WebJul 23, 2010 · Chitin nanofibers were obtained from fresh shells of black tiger prawn ( Penaeus monodon ). The prawn shells were first immersed in 50 wt% ethanol solution at 20 °C for 12 h to remove pigments. Then, calcium carbonates in the chitin sample were removed by immersing the sample in 3.6 wt% hydrochloric acid solution at 20 °C for 24 h. WebAbstract. Chitin is the second most abundant biopolymer in nature and has tremendous potential in renewable materials for packaging, energy storage, reinforced composites, …

WebNov 20, 2016 · Nanofibers in the unmodified chitin were thicker and heterogeneous. The thicknesses varied widely from 10 to 100 nm. The average diameter was 45 ± 8 nm. The great difference in morphology indicates that the carboxylate group of the esterified chitin helped the mechanical disintegration. WebThe original chitin in nature usually has an antiparallel molecular chain alignment forming nanofibers connected by inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonds. These microfibers consist of nanofibers about 2-5 nm in diameter, and about 300 nm long, embedded by protein matrices.

In this work, we developed… WebPreparation of chitin nanofibers The preparation of the chitin nanofibers was adapted from previous work (Lee et al., Food Chem., submitted). Briefly, 20 g of chitin powder was incubated in 200 mL of 1 M NaOH and 1 M HCl to remove the residual protein and calcium carbonate. The pellets were washed with water until a constant pH (∼4.2) is reached.
