In 1899, the first public high school was established. It was the first public high school in either Indian Territory or Oklahoma Territory. WebbThe freshly minted city was independent in spirit. Originally named from its postal address, “Coo-y-yah, Indian Territory” (Coo-y-yah meaning “huckleberry” in Cherokee), the city adopted Pryor Creek in 1887. And in 1909 when postal bureaucracy shortened “Pryor Creek” to “Pryor,” city residents declined to follow suit.
